The trencad\u00eds<\/strong>\u00a0is one of the best known construction techniques of the\u00a0modernism<\/strong> Catalan. In this article we explain what it consists of, examples of buildings that use it and where to buy the material.<\/p>\n

What is the trencad\u00eds technique?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The trencad\u00eds concept is a\u00a0translation<\/strong>\u00a0from Catalan. The more correct Castilian meaning would be\u00a0brittle<\/strong>and refers to a type of\u00a0encaustic cement tiles<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0which is done with\u00a0pieces of tiles<\/strong>\u00a0that have been\u00a0cemented<\/strong>. The result is a floor, wall, fa\u00e7ade or sculpture with a different and characteristic effect.<\/p>\n

This construction technique was used mainly for ornamental purposes and is part of the catalan modernist architecture<\/strong>. However, it should also be pointed out that in the\u00a0Valencian Community<\/strong>\u00a0it is possible to find several buildings with this technique.<\/p>\n

Buildings where you can find trencad\u00eds<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The\u00a0trencad\u00eds<\/strong>\u00a0is a\u00a0invention<\/strong>\u00a0of the great Architect\u00a0Antoni Gaud\u00ed,<\/strong>\u00a0although it is true that it had been experimented with before<\/p>\n

It was first used between\u00a01883 y 1887<\/strong>. It is important to note that it has subsequently been adopted by other architects and in other territories. Therefore, today there are civil, religious and other buildings, not only modernist, that include it.<\/p>\n

    The\u00a0G\u00fcell Estate and Park<\/strong>located in the Pedralbes district of Barcelona, was one of Gaud\u00ed's first works. The pavilions were built between the years of\u00a01883 y 1887<\/strong>. This technique can be observed in the\u00a0pavilions of the towers<\/strong>\u00a0of the pavilions with clarity. It was the first time that this philosophy was employed with a certain stylistic coherence.<\/p>\n

      Today they are preserved in perfect condition and crown the building. We see, then, that there is a chronological coherence in Gaud\u00ed's use of this technique in various buildings and periods.<\/p>\n

The iconic dragon is coated with\u00a0trencad\u00eds<\/strong>as well as in the\u00a0hypostyle hall<\/strong>\u00a0or in the\u00a0banks<\/strong>\u00a0which provide a view of the city. It is probably one of Gaud\u00ed's works in which we find this constructive element most often.<\/p>\n
