Trencadís: Konzept, Werke und Modelle

Trencadís is one of the most popular building techniques of Catalan Modernism. In this article we explain how it works, give examples for buildings that they use, and show where the material can be bought.

Was ist die Trencadís-Technik?

The term Trencadís is a translation from Catalan. The general Spanish translation would be „brüchig“ and is based on a type of hydraulic mosaic made from blocks of fliesen, which have been merged together. The result is a body, a hand, a foot or a skull with a different and characteristic effect.

Trencadís is an expression of the great architect Antoni Gaudí, although it is true that this was already an experiment.

It was first built between 1883 and 1887. It is important to note that it was built later by other architects and in other places. Daher gibt es heute sowohl zivile, religiöse als auch auch andere Gebäude, nicht nur nur modernistische, die es enthalten.

In every case, the fact that it is an eminent medium-sized machine tool manufacturer is a factor of importance. Der Haupttunterschied in der Chronologie besteht darin, dass am Anfang verwertbare hydraulische Keramikreste verwendet wurden, wie z. B. Bruchstücke von Tellern. Today, however, this technology is much more efficient and new technologies are being introduced to achieve attractive visual effects.

Güell Estate

The Güell-Finca and the park in Barcelona's Pedralbes estate were one of Gaudí's first works. The pavilions were built between 1883 and 1887. This technique was clearly to be recognised in the pavilions. It was the first time that this philosophy was used with a certain stylistic coherence.

La Pedrera

This is one of Gaudí's most famous buildings, although it was not without controversy. The name La Pedrera was originally a spelling, and it was built between 1906 and 1912. Trencadís was used for the roofs of this house in the Eixample district of Barcelona.

Today they are perfectly preserved and the building is in perfect condition. We also see that there is a chronological coincidence in Gaudís use of this technology in many buildings and periods.

Park Güell is one of Barcelona's main tourist attractions, although it was originally conceived as a city centre and was built between 1900 and 1914. The iconical fresco is decorated with Trencadis, as well as in the hypostyle or on the walls, which offer a view of the city. It is probably one of Gaudí's works, in which this constructive element is the most important.

Santiago Calatrava is today's architect, who has been the most frequently used for the concept of the Trencadís in his work.

Although it has a unique concept, it is inspired in many ways by the architect A. Gaudí and other modernist architects. Thus the monumental building of the city of art and science of Valencia has many elements of this art.

The Adán Martín Auditorium on Teneriffa is a further masterpiece of Santiago Calatrava. It was built between 1997 and 2003, and we can see some fragments of it on the outer façade. Its location and presence are examples of a clear post-modern concept. The idea is to give the building a living image, which is possible thanks to the blue Trencadis-trees. This is one of the examples of post-modern architecture.
