Care & maintenance of cement tiles

A well-protected cement tile floor lasts for generations. We show you how to seal, clean and maintain it —and with which products— so it keeps its colour, its shine and its character for decades.

Cement tiles are a porous cement material: caring for them comes down to three simple steps. Seal the surface after installation to protect it from stains and moisture, clean daily with a pH-neutral soap, avoiding acids and ammonia, and renew the protection periodically with a sealer or a wax. Mosaics Torra recommends and supplies six specific products for each of these steps.

Why it matters

Why protect your cement tiles

Cement tiles are made from cement and mineral pigment, unglazed. That is the reason for their natural feel and deep colour —and also why they are absorbent. The right treatment does not change their look: it shields them so everyday life leaves no mark.

Prevents stains

Oil, wine, coffee or limescale penetrate an unsealed pore. Once waterproofed, the liquid stays on the surface and wipes away in one gesture.

Keeps colour and shine

Protection prevents premature wear and keeps the pigment alive; with the right wax you can enhance the colour or aim for a more aged finish.

Extends the floor's life

A sealed cement tile floor with regular maintenance withstands traffic and cleaning for generations, like the floors of century-old houses.

The care routine

Seal, clean and maintain

Caring for a cement tile floor is not complicated; it is consistent. These are the three phases, each with its product.

  1. Seal after installation

Once laid and cleaned of building residue, it is waterproofed to close the pore: two coats, the first one before grouting. See the full protocol. Product: Torra Sealer or Brite Sealer.

  2. Clean daily

Regular cleaning with water and a pH-neutral soap. Never acids, bleach or ammonia, which attack the cement. Product: Torra Maintenance.

  3. Maintain and renew

From time to time, depending on use, the protection is renewed or wax is applied to bring back the shine. Product: Wax Tile and sealers.

The complete guide

The initial sealing, step by step

It's the set-up that decides how your floor will age: two coats of sealer and two of wax, applied in the right order and with the right timing. This is the routine we recommend.

  1. Clean and dry after the works

Remove building residue and cement with Torra Floor Cleaner and let the floor dry for about 72 hours after cleaning, until the moisture has completely disappeared.

  2. First coat of sealer, before grouting

Apply Torra Sealer on the clean, dry surface, in horizontal and vertical passes and without excess. This way the grout won't stain the tile when you fill the joints.

  3. Light-coloured grout and immediate cleaning

Fill the joints with light-coloured grout and wipe off the excess immediately with a damp cloth or sponge. Never use acids to remove cement residue.

  4. Second coat of sealer

With the floor clean and dry again, wait 24 hours and apply the second coat of sealer.

  5. Two coats of wax

Finish with two coats of Torra Wax Tile, leaving 24 to 48 hours between coats, before you start using the floor.

Factory tip: always test on a loose tile before treating the whole floor, and apply the sealer without excess: unabsorbed product leaves shiny marks on the surface.

Prevention

Mistakes worth avoiding

Most problems with cement tiles don't come from daily use, but from small avoidable oversights —many of them during the building works. These are the ones we come across most often.

Cleaning with acids or bleach

Acids, bleach, ammonia and strong or alkaline detergents damage the tiles irreversibly. Only water and pH-neutral soap.

Using a dark grout

Dark colours can stain the tile when grouting. Always use a light grout, and wipe off the excess immediately.

Tape, cardboard or plastic

No adhesive tape directly on the floor. To protect it during the works use breathable geotextile: cardboard stains and plastic stops the tile from breathing.

Over-applying the sealer

Unabsorbed product leaves shiny marks on the surface. Thin, cross-applied coats, and a prior test on a loose tile.

Marking or scuffing the tiles

Pencil or pen marks don't come off, and neither do scuffs from careless handling. Tiles should be handled with care and never marked.

Storing in damp conditions

Spare material always goes in a dry, covered place: contact with water or damp can stain the tiles irreversibly.

We resolve doubts

Frequently asked questions about cement tile care

Do cement tiles need to be sealed?
Yes. Cement tiles are a porous cement material and, unsealed, they absorb liquids, which makes staining easier. After installation and the post-work cleaning we recommend waterproofing with Torra Sealer (or Brite Sealer if you also want to enhance the colour). It's the step that prevents most future problems.
How do you clean a cement tile floor day to day?
With water and a pH-neutral soap such as Torra Maintenance. What matters is what to avoid: acids, bleach, ammonia and abrasive products, which attack the cement and dull the colour. You'll find the full guide in our How to clean cement tiles.
How often should the protection be renewed?
It depends on use and traffic. In a home, checking the sealing every few years is usually enough; in busy areas or hospitality, more often. A clear sign is when water stops beading on the surface: then it's worth reapplying sealer or wax.
What's the difference between Torra Sealer and Torra Brite Sealer?
Both seal the pore and create the same stain barrier. The difference is the finish: Torra Sealer respects the natural look of the tile, while Torra Brite Sealer enhances the colour and adds a touch more shine.
Which product do I use if the floor is outdoors?
For the outdoor TorraStone and Gaudí Hexagon series, the TorraStone Sealer is formulated for the outdoors: it enhances the tone and creates a highly resistant barrier. It's important to follow the application instructions on each container. If your outdoor floor is from another series, write to us and we'll advise you.
Can an old or very dirty cement tile floor be recovered?
In many cases, yes. Torra Floor Cleaner removes salt efflorescence, residue and ingrained dirt, and can even strip and restore old cement tiles. Once clean, it is sealed again to protect it. For floors of heritage value, ask us before acting.
Why do white stains appear on a newly laid floor?
They are efflorescence: soluble salts from the building water that crystallise on the surface as the floor dries. It is entirely normal behaviour for this material and they gradually disappear with daily use and mopping with water and neutral soap. If they persist, Torra Floor Cleaner removes them.
Is a sealed floor completely stain-proof?
Sealing gives you margin, not immunity: with an accidental spill, the liquid stays on the surface without penetrating as long as it is removed promptly. It doesn't replace cleaning, nor does it protect against scuffs, handling marks or unsuitable tools. That's why complete care combines sealing, gentle cleaning and wax.
Can I get a satin, glossy or crystallised finish?
Yes. With Torra Wax Tile you get a waxed sheen at home and that aged patina of traditional cement tiles. For professional satin, polished or crystallised finishes, write to us and we'll recommend a specialist applicator for your project.
Where do I buy the maintenance products?
In our maintenance and care shop, with delivery across Spain. Each product card has its own direct-buy button on this very page. If you're unsure which to choose, write to us and we'll advise you.
Before manufacturing

Hasn't your floor been made yet?

Some finishes aren't applied with a product at home, but in the factory, before the tile is produced: the anti-slip surface for outdoors and showers, the waterproofing during production or the mineral finish with aggregate. If you're choosing your floor, take a look at our Factory treatments and finishes — they complement the care you'll see here once it's installed.
