What is trencadís
You've probably heard about the trencadis mosaics. Well, it is a tile made with different irregular pieces of ceramic that are joined together with mortar., a type of mortar created with lime, sand and water.
The novelty of this technique is that the ceramic fragments are broken up and chosen at random, without altering the appearance or any flaws in the lines. Therein lies the magic of trencadís, the surprise of creating an imperfect art.
With them, different silhouettes, designs or shapes are made spontaneously, resulting in totally abstract art or concrete drawings such as flowers, stars, animals, etc. They can also make trencadís pieces with irregular geometric pieces that resemble triangles, circles, rectangles and others.
No doubt about it, this decorative technique is capable of embellishing any room in the home. and adapt to countless decorative styles, as nowadays we can choose designs, colour palettes and formats.
The origins of trencadís
This decorative technique for embellishing the surfaces of large architectural works, buildings and homes, was created by Antoni Gaudí during the renowned Art Nouveau movement Catalan at the beginning of the 20th century.
At that time, the artist created this marvellous technique for a number of reasons:
-
I wanted to generate a different, striking and transgressive optical effect. on the surfaces. In this way, sunlight reflected on the tiles, creating a sense of vitality and movement in the designs. By using glass, the effect was unique and offered an innovative and lively look at the Barcelona of the time.
-
Because trencadís offers an unpredictable and abstract spontaneity. that Gaudí liked so much.
-
Because the technique promoted recycling, This was a characteristic that allowed waste to be given a second life and which, at the time, Gaudí was responsible for finding in buildings, factories, streets and beaches.
-
Because of the adaptability of this technique which could be used in a variety of spaces, living rooms, decorative styles and both flat and curved surfaces.
In his early days, Antoni Gaudí began to create classical mosaics in different churches and homes in Barcelona. An example of this is the church of Sant Pacià in the Sant Andreu district.

Over the years, this Spanish architect witnessed and participated in an era full of revolutionary art.Literature, politics, painting and architecture all underwent major changes linked to enormous creativity. This movement was called Modernism.
In it, the attraction was linked to nature, and in the works of art, the most outstanding characteristics: the movement, the colours, the transformation, the strength of mother earth was reflected in mosaic, ceramics, painting, architecture and sculpture.
